Wado Ryu karatedo in Leiden

Lessons

Parts of the training.

Physical fitness.

A lot of attention is paid to basic fitness. Especially flexibility and relaxtion are essential to develop strength and speed in the movements. With specific exercises the body is prepared for the rich arsenal of techniques.

Basic techniques.

Basic techniques (kihon) are learned separately and in combinations, the so called rensokuwaza. These techniques are made to perfection during the training.

Kata.

Kata are often called the encyclopedia of karatedo. It's a didactic tool in the shape of solo excercises: in a fixed, logical sequence of defense and attack techniques, imaginary opponents are disabled. The technical and tactical insights, whereupon kata is based, are often the result of centuries of martial experience.

Kumite.

Kumite plays a large part in Wado Ryu. It consists of attack and defense with partner. This is possible in the form of a free fight or as a kata for two persons. Even when the techniques are prescribed, kumite must be performed with the same spirit as in a true fight. Idori is a specific part of kumite and is preformed from seiza, the sitting posture on the lower legs.

Grappling.

Next to defenses against kicks, strikes and punching techniques Wado Ryu also teaches defenses against grabbing and groundtechniques.

Weapons.

Defenses against attacks with weapons are part of the curriculum for experienced members. This mostly concerns the study of defense principles against traditional weapons; like the knife, the stick and the Japanese sword.
